Feeding the Hungry Archives

Thank You for Making a Difference!

ODBM would like to thank some caring churches throughout the community and the Crescent City Red Cross who helped to make Christmas special for those who are financially struggling.  In a time when we often think about family and love, there are many who are alone and struggling; we see these faces come and go through our doors on a regular basis.  At ODBM, we try to create a family atmosphere where everyone feels loved and of value.  We are honored that some churches throughout the community and the Red Cross partnered with us through their support to make Christmas a special time for all by extending unconditional love in tangible ways.

We would like to thank the Women’s Ministry of Pelican Bay Evangelical Free Church for their generous and much needed practical gift of hygiene kits.  Some of ODBM’s clients are hard to shop for because they don’t have homes, in the same sense that we do, so the ladies’ choice of gif (Click here to continue reading)

Get Involved: There is a Place For You

So many new things have occurred in 2011 at Our Daily Bread Ministries (ODBM).  You are going to want to get involved!  No matter what your gifting or talents, we have a place for you to participate in helping the community.  We realize that Del Norte County is full of caring individuals who have a desire to be useful.  As the ministry continues to grow, there are even more opportunities.  We have many stories of individuals, we call them angels, who couldn’t find a job, are retired or empty-nesters, but still wanted to do something productive with their time.  These “angels” started volunteering at ODBM and were hooked!  Some of them were able to find full and part-time jobs, yet still find time to come in and help.  If you are feeling a tug on your heart to do something worthwhile, and are unsure where to start; we have an opportunity for you to be a blessing and become part of our family.  We believe everyone has a purpose, so come drop by and talk to us (Click here to continue reading)

Every evening the dear saints gather in prayer before service in Our Daily Bread’s prayer circle.  This is a time when economic lines have been erased, and we enter in as family with One Father!  It is a family unique in that everyone is accepted and valued.  The judgement is left to God, and we are called to Love.  We gather with this sense that we are all sinners saved by Grace and in need of a Savior.  As we pray, it is our hearts’ desire that Christians would step out of their comfort zones, and begin to care about those society has left behind.  There is a tremendous blessing when we are obediant to the call of giving to those who cannot give back, and it is our desire that ALL are blessed!

There are a few churches within our community who have answered the call and stepped out of their comfort zones.  We would like to thank the United Methodist Church for their faithfulness in giving.  Their generous support has helped us to continue to feed the econom (Click here to continue reading)

Thanksgiving Feast of Love

Our Daily Bread Ministries had a feast of Love on Wednesday night, 11/24/10, to meet the needs of the community.  We decided to have our feast of Love on Wednesday in support of the Community Dinner held Thursday at the fairgrounds.

Attendance proved there was a definite need for two nights of feasting.  We fed over 200 people and delived 19 meals and prayer to those who were unable to leave their homes.  The night was truly a one of celebration and thanksgiving!  The “Little Brothers” band rocked the house with contemporary and spontaneous worship. Our Director, Mike Justice, was surprised as volunteers brought him in a birthday cake.

Refuge from the Storm with Powerful Prayer

Monday night’s dinner offered refuge from the storm with a warm, homecooked meal, powerful prayer and inspirational Gospel message all served up with a side of unconditional love.  There were over one hundered guests who sought out refuge from the winds and cold rain.  Many were in need of blankets, but even more are being touched by the message of Love given that points the way to Jesus.  While many new faces were asking for hygiene items, blankets, socks or other essentials, a few of God’s children who have been staying after the meal to listen to the Word were asking for Bibles!  This is proof that ODBM is about more than meeting a physical need.  When a person’s basic physical needs are met and they feel accepted, they are ready to recieve a message that can change them from the inside out.

It is important for us who have warm places to sleep and food on our tables to remember that there are those out there in our community (our neighbors) who are (Click here to continue reading)

Powerful Prayers to Meet Today’s Needs

Friday night, 10/8/10, was amazing!  The Power of God moved mightily and many lives were touched and changed.  Stella Carr gave a psssionately inspiring Word that touched the hearts of our guests and moved many of them to tears.  The night began with acoustic worship accompanied by a native drumbeat that prepared all in attendance to recieve the message of the evening.  The food, as always, was delicious, home-cooked and nutritious and met the physical needs of the people while settling them down to recieve what the main course of the night was…powerful spiritual warfare prayers were lifted up, the Word of God was ministered and recieved.  With every head bowed, Stella led the entire group in the prayer of salvation.; yet many approached her after the message was given for additional prayer.  A gentlemen came in after the service distraught, feeling that the Lord had led him to Our Daily Bread Ministeries for prayer.  Powerful prayer was given along with words of edificati (Click here to continue reading)

Feeding the Hungry with Good Food and Music

Homecooked food delighted our guests as they were entertained by the Gospel rockin’ sounds of Lil Brothers Band.  The menu included Mike’s specialty… spaghetti, fresh veggies and salad and homemade pineapple upside-down cake with caramel topping…the kind of food mom cooks from the heart.  As always, it was served up with Love!  The music  had a great beat and our guests enjoyed the worship.  The night opened with inspirational prayer, and our prayer circle is growing.  It is so nice to gather together as a family and give thanks for all that God is doing.  We believe that God meets us as we gather together in prayer.  Our time together gives people a place where they belong and are appreciated.  There are many requests for blankets with the cold weather quickly approaching.  Unfortuately, we are not able to meet all the needs.  We are in desperate need of blankets to help people stay warm when they leave the building!!!  We want to thank all the peo (Click here to continue reading)

Life Recovery Decisions

Today in our Freedom Now class, on 10/6/10, we made life changing decisions that will affect the way we live and think as we travel the road to freedom!! We learned about a sure-fire way to overcome temptation, keep our peace amidst chaotic environments, and be blessed no matter what our situations.  We explored a way to memorize scripture and devote ourselves to reading the entire Bible in a systematic way.  I personally have tried this method and have found it the only way I have been able to find success in memorizing scripture, and it has helped me to stay focused on God’s perspective rather than my own limited viewpoint.  Many times people have presented methods on which to do this and while people meant well, nothing seemed to come of it. What makes this class so important is that five members of the Freedom Now class decided to make commmittments to do these certain steps along with assigning where, when and who they would be accountable to in following these steps. (Click here to continue reading)

Music and God’s Word Heal the Weary Soul

Monday night’s meal warmed our guests stomaches with Turkey Rice with gravy, homemade strawberry cake, green salad with fresh cucmbers and tomatoes, and a side of  fresh melon.  While the physical needs were satisfied with a good home-cooked meal, the spiritual needs were met with heartfelt acoustic worship.  Our guests were indeed touched as everyone hushed their usual conversation to hear old Gospel tunes sang with heartfelt adoration.  Most of our guests stayed after the music to hear a passage out of Jeremiah.  The passage was specifically for all who came; it was a message that God wanted to free them from captivity just as He did in the days of old.  Many of us are captive because of our past, our ways of thinking, depression, addictions, alcoholism and pain, but God has an answer for all who are captive and He wants them free and has created them for a purpose!  Our guests ears perked up and all were attentive to hear that there was hope and that God has plans for g (Click here to continue reading)
